Kratom is a herbal product that is derived from a tropical tree. These trees are mainly located in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. Kratom has been used by the natives of these countries for a long while now. It is harvested and manufactured into different forms such as pills, powder, extracts and tinctures. Over the past few years, it has become increasingly famous for its effects. It increases the consumer’s energy and makes them more alert. Kratom also helps with depression, anxiety and pain.

Drug tests are medical tests conducted on a person for the purpose of determining if that particular person has consumed Kratom or not. If the former is the result, then some drug tests might also reveal how much Kratom was consumed by the subject. While Kratom is not the main focus of these drug tests, one of its components is. This component is called Mitragyna Speciosa.

Drug tests are mainly conducted and supervised by law enforcement agencies, such as probation offers, police and courts, etc. Drug tests, although rarely, are also sometimes conducted by employers. Additionally, even other authorities or professional bodies can conduct drug tests. This may include sports associations (for example, the NBA and the NFL) or professional bodies like the Bar Council, Chartered Accountants Association and Doctors’ Associations. These bodies may demand their members to take drug tests. Upon failure to comply on the members’ part, their membership or license may be revoked. In any case, if the member complies with the demand and takes the drug test, he / she may still be punished if the consumption of Kratom is against the rules of these bodies. Some of the associations have not completely banned the use of Kratom, but they do demand that it’s use be limited.
The drug tests conducted by the above authorities may be done randomly or the subject may be given a warning. The discretion to warn the subject is upon the authority conducting the drug test. For example, probations officers may take a drug test randomly if the circumstances justify it. Drug tests may also occur randomly or monthly. For example, athletes may be asked to participate in drug tests regularly. The reason for this is to ensure that the relevant athlete does not consume anything that may give him / her an unfair advantage over the opponent.
There are many methods for drug tests and the authorities supervising the drug tests may choose any one or two of them. Some of these methods are; urine samples, saliva tests and drug tests, etc. Those users who wish to pass the drug test must be careful not to consume Kratom products at least 20 days before the test. Not following this recommendation will allow the Kratom product to remain within the body. And as a result, Kratom will appear in the results and might lead to negative consequences.

Why are drug tests conducted for Kratom?

One of the main reasons why drug tests are conducted for Kratom is the attitude of the general public. It is considered to be a somewhat controversial product and is not easily accepted. The reason for this attitude is that Kratom has many similar effects to drugs that are banned in many parts of the world. These drugs are prohibited because they are harmful both on a short-term and long-term basis. Therefore, if these drugs are banned in the relevant countries, then why is it the case that Kratom should remain legal? It is this precautious attitude and the fear of the unknown that has led the public to demand its governments to be strict when it comes to Kratom. As a result, the government has introduced drug tests to discourage users from indulging in Kratom.

Another reason why Kratom is so widely monitored by the states again stems from the fear of the unfamiliar. Unfortunately, not much research has been done concerning Kratom. Consequently, the authorities and the governments don’t understand the mechanics surrounding it, its properties and where its effects stem from. Due to this lack of knowledge, the Food and Drug Administration in the USA has widely discouraged American citizens from consuming Kratom. Some states within the USA have gone as far as to completely ban its consumption and dealings to protect the citizens. These reactions, however, are to some extent warranted. The FDA, after all, only staunchly advocated against Kratom once it became aware that there are health issues among users due to the fact that Kratom was contaminated with bacteria and also heavy metal poisoning. It should be noted that the relevant authorities have started researching Kratom. They can be criticized for not being proactive and doing it earlier. It may also be right to conclude that it might take years before a final verdict is reached and announced. Till then, it seems like the use of Kratom may be strictly monitored by the relevant States.
Another reason why drug tests are conducted for Kratom is to discourage and prevent drug abuse. Many have labelled Kratom as a good alternative for opioids. That is because increased consumption of opioids can lead the user to be dependent, while the use of Kratom may not lead to addiction. However, it can lead to some form of reliance or dependence. Furthermore, the claim that Kratom may not be addictive is not yet proved. Hence, it can be categorized as a belief and it would be better for users to be careful when indulging in Kratom.

The use of Kratom may lead to many benefits. Nevertheless, due to the controversial status of this product, the wary attitude of the people, the professional bodies authorities and the governments all over the world, drug tests have become common. The aim of this article was to discuss the reasons for the close monitoring of those consuming Kratom.
